109th Death Anniversary of Altaf Hussain Hali Observed

LAHORE: The 109th death anniversary of renowned Urdu poet and writer Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali observed on Sunday.

Hali was not only a poet and prose writer but critic, biographer and reformer of Muslims of sub-continent.

He was born in Panipat, where he also received his early education.

Altaf Hussain Hali learnt Arabic and Persian languages and received support from two renowned poets, Ghalib and Shefta in Delhi. He is also considered to be the pioneer of modern Urdu literature.

Hali made serious contributions in reforming Urdu poetry paying serious attention to the call of Maulana Mohammad Hussain Azad. He also worked with Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s for rationalism in social, political and educational matters of the Muslims of the region.

He narrated the bad situation of Muslims of the sub-continent in his famous poetic work as “Mussadas-e-Hali”.

His notable works are Muqaddama-i-Sher-o-shairi, Tiryaaq-e Masmoom, Madd-o-jazar-e Islam, Madd-o-jazar-e Islam, Tabaqaat-ul Arz and biographies of Persian poet Sadi, Sir Syed and Ghalib.

Altaf Hussain Hali passed on December 31 in 1914.
