SZCZECIN, Poland: A driver who crashed his car into a crowd in the Polish city of Szczecin on Friday, injuring 19 people, including six children, is receiving psychiatric treatment and has ruled out terrorism, police said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Mark Yasjan told reporters that the initial investigation into the case showed that this individual had been receiving psychiatric treatment for the past four years.

He said police and prosecutors were trying to “understand the motivations of this individual,” but they ruled out the possibility of “an act of terrorism.”

Yaschin added: The perpetrator of this case is a 33-year-old Polish citizen who lives in Szczecin.

Witnesses said the car sped off and crashed into people waiting for a tram in the northwest city centre.

He added that the driver traveled another kilometer (0.6 miles) before colliding with three other vehicles, which resulted in the driver being injured. Then this man was arrested.

“The injured include six children, two of whom are in critical condition,” Governor Adam Rudosky told reporters. He added that 15 people were taken to the hospital.

Szczecin police spokesman Pawel Pankao said there were no signs the suspect was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
