5.3-Magnitude Quake Hits Afghan-Tajik Border

BEIJING: An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 jolted the Afghanistan-Tajikistan Border Region at 0005 GMT on Wednesday, according to the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences.

The earthquake’s epicentre was initially determined to be at 36.43 degrees north latitude and 71.45 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 110.2km.

On the evening of November 13, 2023, Tajikistan experienced tremors with a magnitude of 4.9. The epicentre was determined at 38.73 degrees latitude and 72.49 degrees longitude, with a depth of 194 km.

Last month, Afghanistan experienced significant earthquakes one after another, claiming over 1,000 lives.

The country saw three major earthquakes hitting it within a week, inducing widespread panic and trauma among people.
