SRINAGAR: More than 50 trade union leaders and activists have been arrested by police in Srinagar to prevent their demonstration to express solidarity with India farmers in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

According to the media reports, the protest was organized following the call from Samyukta Kisan Morcha for a nationwide strike urging the Modi government to agree to the demands of the protesting Indian farmers, which include securing a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

The Kashmiri trade union leaders and activists were arrested by police near Pratap Park on Residency Road in Srinagar as they were gathering for the protests. The Jammu Kashmir Apple Farmers’ Federation said in a statement that farmers and trade union members were stopped despite their peaceful protests. The statement further said that police resorted to force and detained numerous union leaders, including President Zahoor Ahmad Rather of the Jammu Kashmir Apple Farmers Federation.

CPI (M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami denounced the police crackdown on the demonstrators in the valley. —APP
