700Kgs of Substandard Chips, Rotten Edible Items Binned

PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority on Wednesday took action by recovering and disposing of 700 kg of substandard chips and over 100 kg of rotten food items in Peshawar and Nowshera.

The Food Authority while taking notice of public complaints received in an online public hearing conducted operations in Peshawar and Nowshera, as stated by the Food Authority spokesperson.

A team from the authority conducted a raid on chips factories situated on Charsadda Road, uncovering the use of non-food grade colour in chip preparation. The team confiscated and discarded over 700 kg of substandard chips. Simultaneously, in Tehsil Pabbi, district Nowshera, operations were carried out in various markets where teams inspected pop and chips wholesalers, chicken and kebab shops, as well as chips and spices factories.

During the inspections, a spices factory was found with 800 grams of non-food grade colour, 5 kg of mislabeled packing material, and 50 kg of substandard garlic, all of which were seized. Additionally, three chicken shops had 40 kg of substandard chicken meat seized and discarded. The spokesperson mentioned that hefty fines were imposed for violations of hygiene rules, and several businesses were issued notices for improvement.

The Director-General of the Food Authority, Shafiullah Khan, issued a stern warning, emphasizing that strict disciplinary action would be taken against those involved in adulteration. He urged the general public to report any food factories in their vicinity to the Food Authority officials to ensure appropriate action is taken. —APP
