SAN FRANCISCO: ChatGPT creator OpenAI made a strong case for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in content moderation, saying it can unlock efficiencies at social media firms by speeding up the time it takes to handle some of the demanding tasks.

Despite the considerable hype around generative AI, companies like Microsoft and Alphabet (Google’s parent company) have yet to monetize the technology in which they have been investing billions of dollars in the hope that it will have a significant impact across industries.

OpenAI said that its latest GPT-4 AI model can reduce the process of content moderation to a few hours from months and ensure more consistent labelling.

For social media giants like Meta which oversees platforms such as Facebook, content moderation represents an arduous undertaking. These companies employ thousands of moderators worldwide to prevent users from encountering harmful content like child pornography and extreme violence.

“The process (of content moderation) is inherently slow and can lead to mental stress on human moderators,” OpenAI highlighted. “With this system, the process of developing and customizing content policies is trimmed down from months to hours.”

Additionally, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, affirmed that the company does not train its AI models using data that is generated by the users.
