SRINAGAR: An analytical report released by the Research Section of Kashmir Media Service highlights an alarming increase in state terrorism and human rights violations in the illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir region under the rule of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government in India.

The report covers the period from January 2015 to the present.

Casualties: Indian troops martyred 2,152 Kashmiris during the specified period, with 305 killed in custody or fake encounters. Prominent Hurriyat leaders such as Syed Ali Gilani, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, and Altaf Ahmed Shah also died in Indian captivity. The casualties included 47 women and 142 children.

Impact on Families: The killings by Indian troops left 181 women widowed and 445 children orphaned. A total of 33,150 people were injured due to the use of force by Indian army, paramilitary, and police personnel on peaceful protesters. Additionally, 41,136 individuals, including Hurriyat leaders, activists, students, youth, journalists, Ulema, and human rights activists, were arrested during the period.

Destruction of Property and Confiscation: Indian forces destroyed 4,479 residential houses and other structures, and 1,134 women were reportedly molested. Over 600 Kashmiri Muslim government employees were terminated from service by the BJP regime, and more than 800 properties, including agricultural lands, houses, and shops, were confiscated as a punitive measure against those supporting the struggle for the right to self-determination.

January 2024 Incidents: In January alone, Indian troops martyred three Kashmiris, two of them in custody or fake encounters. At least 74 individuals were arrested during the month.

The report underscores the persistent human rights violations, including killings, arrests, torture, destruction, property seizures, and harassment by Indian forces’ personnel in the occupied territory. The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has condemned these violations, appealing to the international community to intervene and press India to resolve the Kashmir dispute in line with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
