Algerian President Schedules Presidential Election for September 7

ALGIERS: President of Algeria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune has announced to hold presidential election on September 7, the presidency said on Thursday.

A statement from the president’s office without providing any further details, said the announcement comes three months ahead of original schedule.

The statement issued after a meeting headed by Tebboune and attended by lawmakers and the army’s chief of staff said that it was decided to hold early presidential elections on September 7.

By rescheduling the elections, Tebboune exercises one of his powers granted by Article 91 of the Constitution.

Tebboune who was elected in December 2019 for a five-year term, under the constitution, can run for a second and final term. The parliament members last year urged him to do so.

He has not officially announced his candidacy for the upcoming elections yet.
