ISLAMABAD: Another resolution seeking a delay in the February 8 general elections was moved in the Senate on Sunday, citing the weather and the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Independent Parliamentary Group’s senator Hilalur Rehman submitted the resolution citing severe cold weather, snowfall, and security challenges as hindrances to the polls.

The resolution said that the severe cold and snowfall in KP are depriving the citizens of casting their votes while the candidates are also facing numerous challenges in running their campaigns.

It said that in the same way, due to security concerns in the country, particularly in KP, candidates are facing threats of terrorist attacks while campaigning. It was also creating obstacles and limiting candidates’ participation in their campaigns.

The resolution added that the date of February 8 to hold polls is not suitable. It urged the ECP to delay elections to a date that was acceptable for all the relevant stakeholders.

It is to be mentioned here that it was the third resolution moved in the Senate demanding a delay in the general elections.

Resolutions in Senate Seeking Elections Delay

A similar resolution was tabled in the upper house of the parliament a couple of days ago.

The resolution was moved by Senator Hidayatullah, a member of Pakistan’s Senate from the Independent Parliamentary Group.

Earlier this month, the Senate adopted a resolution, which independent Senator Dilawar Khan moved during a session with only fifteen legislators in attendance. It sought election delay in the light of extreme weather in hilly areas and the deteriorating security situation.
