LOS ANGELES, United States: Arizona state senators voted Wednesday to repeal the 1864 abortion law, with two Republicans crossing the aisle to side with Democrats.

The 16-14 vote in the state Senate comes after the House passed the bill last week, also relying on a handful of Republicans who voted against their conservative colleagues.

Wednesday’s emotional debate followed weeks of efforts by moderates in the battleground state of Arizona to repeal the Civil War-era law.

The western state, a must-win for both Joe Biden and his Republican rival Donald Trump in the November White House race, jumped headlong into the contentious abortion rights legal debate last month when its supreme court ruled the 160-year-old law was enforceable.
