COLOMBO: In a significant blow to the Sri Lankan cricket team, spinner Maheesh Theekshana has been ruled out of the much-anticipated Asia Cup final against India due to a hamstring injury.

This unfortunate confirmation came from Sri Lanka’s captain, Dasun Shanaka, on a Saturday, just a day before the title clash in Colombo.

The 23-year-old spinner sustained the hamstring injury during their Super Four victory over Pakistan, securing their place in the final of the 50-over tournament. This event serves as a prelude to the upcoming ODI World Cup scheduled to take place in India next month.

Shanaka informed the media that he won’t be able to take part in this game since he got a Grade 3 injury, but he will be there for the World Cup. Despite this setback, the team remains optimistic about Theekshana’s participation in the upcoming World Cup.

Theekshana had showcased his talent by claiming eight wickets in five matches, providing vital support to a youthful bowling attack alongside pacer Matheesha Pathirana and fellow spinner Dunith Wellalage. In his absence, top-order batsman Sahan Arachchige will step in and join the squad while Theekshana undergoes rehabilitation, as announced by Sri Lanka Cricket.

Despite being considered underdogs in the tournament, Sri Lanka, who co-hosted the event with Pakistan, has defied expectations by making it to their 11th Asia Cup final and stands a chance to clinch their seventh title. Their journey to the Super Fours was dramatic, securing a crucial victory over Afghanistan, and they’ve maintained their momentum, despite a loss to India in the Super Fours.

The boys really want to deliver for the country, Shanaka emphasized. As a team, we have been underdogs, so everyone wants to perform on the bigger stage. These youngsters need to show the world what they are capable of. Sri Lanka remains determined to showcase their talent and determination in the upcoming World Cup, aiming to make their mark on the international stage.
