JAKARTA: The Indonesian authorities have initiated free tattoo removal procedures for Muslims in Jakarta during the holy month of Ramadan.

Hundreds of Indonesian Muslims have already signed up for the program targeting low-income communities in the capital of Indonesia.

The program, which was first launched by Indonesia’s national alms agency in 2021, has been held across Jakarta’s administrative regions throughout Ramadan in collaboration with the Islamic Medical Service.

Nasir Tajang, a deputy chairman at the agency, told Arab media on Monday that during Ramadan, lot of Muslims want to get closer to their religion and get their tattoos removed.

He added that the government launched this program for the fourth year because of the public interest. The official said this year alone 600 people have already signed up for tattoo removal program.

He said the initiative will target the low-income groups, as tattoo removal procedures are quite costly.

Tajang, the government through this program want to inspire people, to know that the door of repentance is always open for the faithful.

Tattoos carry negative connotations in Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country.
