BAKU: Azerbaijan solemnly commemorated the 32nd anniversary of the Khojaly massacre on Monday, remembering the tragic events of 1992 when Armenian forces brutally attacked the town of Khojaly, resulting in the deaths of 613 Azerbaijani civilians, including women, children, and the elderly. As the nation pays tribute to the victims, attention has turned to recent developments, including the discovery of a new mass grave in Khojaly.

The Khojaly massacre, one of the darkest chapters in Azerbaijan’s history, occurred during the First Karabakh War, when Armenian forces occupied Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent regions. The attack on Khojaly left hundreds dead and hundreds more injured, with many still missing to this day.

Azerbaijan’s ally, Türkiye, described the massacre as a “dark stain on the history of humanity,” reaffirming its unwavering support for justice and recognition of Azerbaijan’s territorial rights.

As part of ongoing restoration efforts in Khojaly, a new mass grave was recently discovered near a former carpet factory. The Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan confirmed that bone fragments belonging to at least four persons, including a young child, were found. The victims showed signs of torture and had been buried over 25 years ago. An investigation into the discovery has been initiated, with authorities committed to uncovering the truth and holding those responsible to account.

Commemorative Events Across Azerbaijan

Commemorative events across Azerbaijan, including in the capital Baku, honored the memory of the victims, providing solace to grieving families while reaffirming the nation’s resolve to seek justice for the atrocities committed during the Khojaly massacre.

Commemoration events were also held across Türkiye, from Istanbul to the capital of Ankara, for victims of the Khojaly massacre. Turkish Ambassador in Baku Cahit Bağcı was among those visiting a monument in Baku representing the victims where he paid his respects to victims. Türkiye has always supported Azerbaijan in its fight for justice for the victims of the massacre and its territorial rights in places illegally occupied by Armenia.
