DHAKA: Web services of some government departments in the south Asian country Bangladesh were restored on Wednesday amid a warning of a cyberattack on official and private websites.

The central bank and the election commission in Bangladesh put their web-based services offline, fearing cyberattack by an Indian hacker group, which threatened to disrupt the computer networks of healthcare, financial institutions, and other official departments.

The precautionary steps were taken after a state-run agency working to maintain cybersecurity issued an alert, Anadolu Agency reported.

The group said the hacking activity could take place on 15 August.

Ashok Kumar Debnath, Election Commission’s Additional Secretary, said that they shut the server on Monday night as a precautionary measure, and it was restored on Wednesday afternoon.

Claims of Cyberattacks

Meanwhile, there were claims that the hackers accessed and leaked data from twenty-five government and private institutions, including the Directorate General of Health Services and the Investment Corporation of Bangladesh.

Sukanta Chakraborty, the spokesman of the Bangladesh e-Government Computer Incident Response Team, said they were analyzing the overall situation,

He added that some websites often face service disruption because of maintenance works.
