MINSK: Belarus on Monday accused Poland of causing long delays at its border with the European Union (EU) by slowing the movement of trucks, alleging that the Central European country was failing to implement bilateral agreements.

A fierce critic of veteran Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Poland, closed one of its key border crossings with Belarus in February, citing security concerns, a decision Belarus called “catastrophic.”

Strained relations between the two countries deteriorated sharply in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine and used Belarusian territory as a launch pad for the attack.

Long queue of vehicles Belarus-Poland border crossing

“Since Friday, a long queue in front of the only accessible border crossing point on the Belarus-Poland border, Kukuryki (Kozłowiczy), has doubled in size and now totals 1,000 vehicles including loaded trucks,” the Belarusian border committee said in a statement.

“The major reason is the failure of the Polish side to implement bilateral agreements on the passage of trucks,” it said, accusing Poland of only processing 61 percent of the typical number of trucks crossing the border over the weekend.

The border service of Poland was not immediately available to comment.
