TEL AVIV, Israel: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated the call for Hamas to agree to a ceasefire deal on Wednesday during talks with Israel’s leadership.

Blinken emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire, stating, “Even in these very difficult times, we are determined to get a ceasefire that brings the hostages home—and to get it now. And the only reason that that wouldn’t be achieved is because of Hamas.”

The proposed ceasefire deal includes a temporary halt to Israel’s offensive in Gaza and the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for hostages seized on October 7. Hamas is expected to respond to this offer.

In addition to ceasefire efforts, Blinken is also focused on increasing aid to the Gaza Strip, where severe shortages of food have raised concerns about an impending famine. The United Nations has highlighted the urgent need for humanitarian assistance in Gaza.

During his visit, Blinken met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and is scheduled to hold discussions with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He also plans to visit Ashdod, a port near Gaza recently reopened by Israel for aid deliveries.

“We also have to be focused on people who are suffering in this crossfire,” Blinken stressed during his meeting with Herzog.

On Tuesday, Blinken witnessed the departure of a Jordanian aid convoy bound for the newly reopened Erez crossing between Israel and Gaza, underscoring ongoing efforts to address humanitarian needs in the region.
