AMMAN: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday demanded that the Palestinian resistance group Hamas accept a proposal for a Gaza ceasefire and release of hostages as the Palestinian group prepared its response.

Speaking to reporters in Amman on Tuesday, Blinken emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Now it is on the Palestinian group. No more delays, no more excuses. The time to act is now.” He stressed the importance of reaching an agreement in the coming days to alleviate the suffering of civilians in the region. “We want to see in the coming days this agreement coming together,” he said.

While addressing questions about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s threats of a ground assault on Gaza’s city of Rafah, Blinken refrained from direct commentary. Instead, he reiterated Washington’s focus on achieving a truce deal brokered by Egypt and Qatar.

Highlighting the significance of a ceasefire, Blinken underscored its role in alleviating humanitarian suffering and creating a conducive environment for sustainable peace. He expressed hope for a resolution that addresses the pressing needs of the affected population.

Following his remarks in Amman, Blinken proceeded to Israel on Tuesday to continue his efforts in advocating for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Blinken witnessed the departure of the first Jordanian aid convoy destined for Gaza through the Erez crossing, which was recently reopened by Israel. He hailed the progress in aid delivery but emphasized the need for further action to address the dire humanitarian situation. The crossing has not been used much since the war broke out on October 7.
