LOS ANGELES: California authorities confirmed on Tuesday that the body found in the mountains near Los Angeles has been identified as missing British actor Julian Sands. Human remains were discovered by hikers over the weekend, prompting a response from local authorities.
Sands, who gained fame for his role in the 1985 film “A Room with a View,” had gone missing in January while hiking on Mount San Antonio, commonly known as Mount Baldy, which stands at an elevation of 10,000 feet (3,000 meters). The hikers who made the discovery immediately alerted authorities, who then transported the body to the local coroner’s office.
In a statement, the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department confirmed the identification of the body as that of 65-year-old Julian Sands from North Hollywood. The circumstances surrounding his death are still under investigation, pending further test results.
Julian Sands’ Love for Hiking
Julian Sands, known for his love of hiking, often expressed his joy in being close to a mountain summit on a crisp morning. Mount Baldy, the peak where he disappeared, is a popular destination for Los Angeles residents, but it has also proven to be treacherous, with eight known deaths between 2017 and 2022, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
The area experienced heavy snowfall during December and January due to successive storms that hit California. Sands’ brother, Nick, expressed his acceptance that Julian would not be found alive two weeks after the search efforts began. While not officially declared missing, presumed dead, Nick stated his belief that his brother had passed away, as reported by English local media in Yorkshire, where the siblings grew up.
