MOGADISHU, Somalia: Somali security forces have apprehended 16 suspects believed to be connected to the recent terrorist attack on the SYL hotel in Mogadishu.

The assault, marked by explosions and gunfire, unfolded on Thursday, targeting the SYL hotel, a prominent venue often frequented by government officials and business figures in close proximity to the presidential palace.

Among the detained individuals is Abdinasir Dahir Nur, identified as the mastermind behind the attack, along with four others allegedly linked to the vehicles employed in the assault. The arrests mark a breakthrough in the investigation, signifying a significant stride toward justice and accountability.

The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) hailed the successful operation, emphasizing that the captured suspects form a crucial part of the network responsible for orchestrating the SYL Hotel attack. Assurances were made that due process would be followed, ensuring that all perpetrators face the full extent of the law.

The terror group Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda affiliate, claimed responsibility for the assault, which saw armed militants storming the hotel premises following coordinated bombings and sustained gunfire. The siege, lasting nearly 13 hours, culminated in the decisive intervention of security forces, resulting in the neutralization of the attackers.

Tragically, the attack claimed the lives of three soldiers, and left 27 individuals injured, including three Members of Parliament, as confirmed by local authorities. The incident underscores the persistent threat posed by terrorist organizations such as Al-Shabaab and Daesh/ISIS, perpetuating instability and insecurity in the region.

Since its inception in 2007, Al-Shabaab has waged a relentless campaign against the Somali government and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), intensifying its activities despite concerted efforts to counter its influence. The recent attack comes amid President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s renewed commitment to combat terrorism, declaring an uncompromising stance against extremist elements.

As Somalia grapples with ongoing security challenges, the arrests represent a crucial step toward dismantling terrorist networks and safeguarding the country’s stability and peace.
