TORONTO: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday acknowledged fear in Canada’s Sikh community but underscored the “rule of law” after the arrest of three Indian intelligence agency operatives in connection with last year’s killing of a Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Vancouver.

Trudeau’s remarks came amidst concerns within Canada’s Sikh community and diplomatic tensions between Canada and India over the case.

Trudeau addressed the developments during a gala in Toronto celebrating Sikh heritage and culture on Saturday. He acknowledged the apprehension felt by many within the Sikh community. Despite the unease, Trudeau urged faith in Canada’s justice system. He emphasized the importance of remaining steadfast in commitment to democratic principles.

The arrests, made by police on Friday, were described by Trudeau as significant. He underscored Canada’s status as a country governed by the rule of law with a robust and independent justice system. Three Indian nationals, aged 22 and 28, were apprehended on charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy in connection with Nijjar’s killing.

According to authorities, the suspects are believed to have played roles as the shooter, driver, and lookout during the incident. Investigations are ongoing to determine any potential ties to the Indian government and whether additional persons were involved in the crime.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, an advocate for Sikh separatism and a Canadian citizen, was fatally shot by masked assailants in the parking lot of a Sikh temple in suburban Vancouver on June 18, 2023. His murder sparked diplomatic tensions between Canada and India after Trudeau blamed Indian government involvement. The accusations led to a diplomatic spat and reciprocal measures between the two countries.

The case further escalated when the US Justice Department charged an Indian citizen residing in the Czech Republic with plotting a similar assassination attempt on American soil.
