DAVOS: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar expressed confidence that a stable government would emerge after the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8, anticipating sustained economic stability for Pakistan.

In an interview with CNBC during the 54th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF), PM Kakar projected slow but sustainable growth.

Addressing speculations about the election date, PM Kakar emphasized that everyone was now certain about the scheduled elections on February 8. The caretaker government’s top priority is economic revival, focusing on growth and essential economic indicators. He stressed the importance of the next government following a clear principle of spending less and earning more to achieve economic stability.

PM Kakar outlined the caretaker government’s initiatives, including introducing a revamped taxation program and structural changes. The government aims to publish a white paper on its 4-5 months of performance, highlighting aggressive privatization, federal expenditure cuts, and talks with provinces to rationalize their spending.

Regarding the delay in elections, PM Kakar acknowledged legal and technical challenges related to electoral procedures but assured that they had been addressed. He emphasized the importance of providing the people of Pakistan the opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to elect leadership for the next five years.

Responding to questions about former PTI Chairman’s imprisonment, PM Kakar clarified that it was not due to political opinion but for purportedly inciting riots and encouraging disruption. He affirmed the right of the courts to decide such matters.

On media freedom in Pakistan, PM Kakar stated that even Western media faces stricter regulations. Addressing regional issues, he highlighted Pakistan’s advocacy for a responsible withdrawal of US and NATO forces from Afghanistan, anticipating real-time implications for Pakistan.

PM Kakar stressed the need for Pakistan to enhance its counter-terrorism capacity and become a viable economic entity and democracy simultaneously. He emphasized Pakistan’s role, urging acknowledgment and appreciation.

Regarding Pakistan’s relations with China, PM Kakar reassured that the close strategic and historical ties would remain unaffected, regardless of regional developments.
