BEIJING: China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, affirmed Beijing’s commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation with Moscow during talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday.

The meeting underscored efforts to solidify diplomatic ties amid Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Wang Yi emphasized China’s support for Russia’s stable development under President Putin’s leadership, pledging continued strategic cooperation and mutual support on the world stage. He highlighted the importance of public support for Russia’s progress and expressed confidence in a bright future under Putin’s leadership.

In response, Lavrov expressed gratitude for China’s support following Putin’s recent re-election, noting President Xi Jinping’s early congratulations to the Russian president. Lavrov emphasized the deep trust of the Russian people in Putin’s leadership and praised China’s commitment to strengthening strategic partnership.

The relationship between China and Russia has deepened in recent years, with increased economic cooperation and diplomatic engagement. Analysts suggest that China’s influence has grown amid Russia’s international isolation due to the Ukraine conflict.

Despite Western calls for China to leverage its influence over Russia for peace in Ukraine, Chinese officials have emphasized their commitment to strategic cooperation with Moscow. US officials have cautioned China against indirectly aiding Russia’s military efforts through material support to Russia’s defense industry.
