China Denies Law Banning Purchase, Use of iPhone

BEIJING: China has denied issuing any law, regulation, or policy document to prohibit the use and purchase of cell phones of foreign brands, such as iPhones.

Mao Ning, the foreign ministry spokesperson, denied such news regarding some Chinese government agencies’ ban on using iPhones at a regular press briefing while responding to a question. She said, “However, recently, we did notice media reports about security issues related to the iPhone.”

In her statement, Mao Ning emphasized the Chinese government’s strong commitment to cyber and information security, underlining its equal treatment of Chinese and foreign companies.

She emphasized the expectation that all cellphone companies operating in China adhere strictly to the country’s legal framework, including the Data Security Law of the People’s Republic of China and the Personal Information Protection Law of the People’s Republic of China.

The objective is to bolster information security management, safeguard consumers’ data stored on mobile devices against unauthorized access by individuals or organizations, and ensure overall information security.

The spokesperson reaffirmed China’s dedication to promoting a high level of openness, focusing on protecting the rights and interests of foreign companies within the bounds of the law.

She underscored the nation’s commitment to cultivating a top-tier, market-oriented, law-abiding, and international business environment. Furthermore, she emphasized that China consistently maintains an open and welcoming approach to foreign companies, encouraging them to leverage the opportunities arising from China’s development and participate in the nation’s economic growth.
