China Sees Improved Water, Air Quality in 2022

ISLAMABAD: Data from China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment showed that the country’s water and air quality registered steady improvement in 2022.

The share of days with improved air quality stood at 86.5 percent in the cities of China at and above the prefecture level, Jiang Huohua, an official with the ministry said.

Jiang said the proportion of days with heavy air pollution was as low as 0.9 percent last year, dropping to less than one percent for the first time.

The PM2.5 density, a main indicator of air pollution, dropped 3.3 percent year on year basis to 29 micrograms per cubic meter, decreasing below 30 micrograms per cubic meter for the very first time from the date the data was first monitored.

Water and air pollution in China

According to ecns.cn, the proportion of surface water at or above Grade III in China’s five-tier water quality system rose three percentage points yearly to 87.9 percent last year. In contrast, the lowest level of surface water below Grade V stood at 0.7 percent, a decrease of 0.5 percentage points from 2021.

According to the ministry, China will step up its pollution control and prevention efforts in 2023, taking measures in different fields to fight against soil, air, and water pollution.
