BEIJING: In response to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s recent statement advocating for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly (WHA) as an observer, China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson on Thursday emphasized that the US statement egregiously violates the one-China principle and the three China-US Joint Communiqués. He expressed China’s strong condemnation and firm opposition to Blinken’s statement.

Highlighting Taiwan as an integral part of China’s territory, the spokesperson reiterated China’s consistent stance on the matter, insisting that any involvement of Taiwan in international organizations must adhere to the one-China principle. This principle is not only fundamental to China’s sovereignty but is also enshrined in key international resolutions, including UNGA Resolution 2758 and WHA Resolution 25.1.

The spokesperson criticized the US statement for misleadingly supporting the separatist activities of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities in Taiwan, undermining the political foundation for Taiwan’s participation in the WHA.

Emphasizing the sensitivity of the Taiwan issue in China-US relations, the spokesperson urged the US to respect the one-China principle, abide by international law, and refrain from supporting “Taiwan independence” or any variations thereof.

Furthermore, the spokesperson highlighted the widespread international support for the one-China principle, asserting that attempts to use Taiwan to contain China are futile and will face firm opposition from the international community.
