China-US Ties: Biden, Xi Vow to Ease Tension

SAN FRANCISCO: US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping during an important meeting have vowed to ease friction between the two superpowers over world issues, Western media reported on Wednesday.

The meeting was held at the Filoli estate, about 48 km away from San Francisco. Both leaders have reached the city to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum hosted by the US.

Biden in his opening remarks, said the US and China have to ensure that competition between them does not convert into conflict while managing ties.

Xi told Biden that though the world has come out of the COVID pandemic impacts but is still under its pressures. He noted the global economy is recovering, but its momentum is slow.

He termed the US-China ties the most important bilateral relationship in the world, adding that he shares heavy personalities with Biden regarding the people pf the two countries, for the world, and for history.

Xi strongly believed that China and the United State being two large countries of the world cannot turn their back on each other.

Confrontation between China-US to have unbearable consequences

He said that any kind of confrontation would have unbearable consequences for both the states. Reportedly Biden and Xi have discussed South China Sea, Taiwan, Israel-Hamas war, Russia-Ukraine war, North Korea. According to experts Chinese President Xi had a smooth summit with Biden.

Before the meeting, both countries supported a new renewable energy target, adding they would work to reduce methane and plastic pollution, a renewal of climate cooperation suspended after former US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in 2022.

This was the first interaction between Biden and Xi since they met in Bali in November 2022. Tensions have persisted between China and the US for several years as the two global powers compete for influence in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Additionally, Beijing’s enhanced cooperation with Russia to reduce US dominance has further complicated the dynamics of international ties.

Earlier, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi during his visit to the United States stressed the necessity for both nations to end interference, overcome hurdles, build consensus, and accumulate results to pave the way for a successful meeting between the leaders of China and US.
