BEIJING: China announced on Monday that it will take “countermeasures” against companies involved in arms sales to Taiwan following the United States’ approval of a $300 million arms deal aimed at strengthening the island’s defenses.

Viewing Taiwan as an integral part of its territory, China has reiterated its commitment to eventually reunify with the island, while the US Congress mandates the supply of weapons to support Taiwan’s defense as a self-governing democracy.

The US State Department gave the green light to an arms package last week, which both sides claim will enhance Taipei’s joint battle command and control system. In response, Beijing asserted its position, stating it would take “resolute and strong measures to defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

China Warns US to Stop Arming Taiwan

Foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin, speaking at a regular news briefing, urged the United States to halt the “dangerous trend of arming Taiwan” and cease actions that escalate tensions in the Taiwan Strait. “China will eventually reunify, and indeed must reunify,” Wang emphasized.
