BEIJING: Buoyed by immense holiday ticket sales, China’s 2023 box office hit the twenty billion yuan ($2.89 billion) milestone on Sunday, earlier than 2022, according to film data platforms Beacon and Maoyan.

This came after China witnessed the third highest-grossing May Day holiday when nearly 1.52 billion yuan was generated over 5 days through 3 May, mostly by the comedy film “Godspeed” and action movie “Born to Fly,” a dramatic depiction of elite Chinese pilots testing new fighter planes.

In January, the Spring Festival holiday — one of the most lucrative filmgoing periods in the country — was the second highest-grossing to date.

Whopping earnings on Box Office

It raked in a whopping amount of 6.77 billion yuan as crowds flooded theatres following the government adjustment of its response to COVID-19 and the lifting of many restrictions.
