BEIJING: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a scathing critique of the United States’ efforts to suppress China while concurrently praising the country’s burgeoning partnership with Russia.

Wang’s remarks came during a press conference at China’s largest annual political gathering,  amidst heightened geopolitical tensions, notably across the Taiwan and in the wake of Russia’s conflict in Ukraine.

He condemned the ongoing conflict in Gaza as a “disgrace for civilization” and emphasized China’s expanding political reach on the global stage.

Wang’s criticism of the US centered on what he described as Washington’s extreme and irresponsible attempts to suppress China. He expressed concern over the escalating desire to assign blame, stating that it had reached an “unbelievable level.” The Foreign Minister’s remarks underscored China’s perception of itself as a target of US aggression in various domains, including economic and strategic spheres.

In contrast, Wang lauded China’s partnership with Russia, framing it as a novel paradigm for major power relations that diverged from the dynamics of the Cold War era. He emphasized the basis of this relationship on non-alignment, non-confrontation, and the avoidance of targeting third parties. This partnership has drawn criticism from Western powers, particularly in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but Wang defended it as a strategic alliance based on mutual interests.

Turning to the conflict in Gaza, Wang condemned the violence, characterizing it as a tragedy for humankind and a disgrace for civilization. He reiterated China’s support for Palestinians and called for an immediate ceasefire. Additionally, Wang defended China’s actions in the South China Sea, asserting the country’s right to defend its sovereignty in accordance with international law.

Wang also rejected the European Union’s portrayal of China as a rival, emphasizing China’s commitment to peace, stability, and progress in the world. His remarks underscore China’s assertive stance in international affairs and its determination to challenge traditional power dynamics. However, they may exacerbate tensions with Western powers, particularly regarding China’s actions in the South China Sea and its partnership with Russia.
