BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated on Wednesday that “external interference” would not hinder Beijing’s resolve to reunify with Taiwan, as he engaged in rare dialogue with Taiwan’s former leader Ma Ying-jeou.

Ma, on a visit to China termed a “journey of peace,” aims to ease tensions with Beijing amid its claims over Taiwan, which it views as a part of its territory. Xi warmly welcomed Ma’s delegation in Beijing, marking a significant meeting between leaders from Beijing and Taipei since 2015.

Xi emphasized the historical unity of the Chinese nation across the Taiwan Strait, highlighting that differences in systems do not alter the fact that both sides belong to one nation and one people. He firmly stated that “external interference cannot stop the historic cause of our reunion.”

During their meeting, Ma emphasized the importance of youth from both sides in shaping the future of the Chinese nation and advocated for peaceful dispute resolution, emphasizing opposition to Taiwan independence.

Ma’s tenure as Taiwan’s leader from 2008 to 2016 witnessed improved cross-strait ties, though relations have deteriorated since Tsai Ing-wen’s presidency began in 2016. Beijing has escalated diplomatic and military pressures against Taiwan, refusing to rule out force to achieve “unification.”

The visit and remarks by Ma, aligned with the Kuomintang (KMT) party, have drawn attention in Taiwan, particularly given the upcoming inauguration of Tsai’s deputy, Lai Ching-te. Lai’s party has expressed curiosity about KMT’s stance on Ma’s visit.

As tensions escalate with increased Chinese military activities around Taiwan, the issue was discussed in a recent call between US President Joe Biden and President Xi, underscoring the gravity of cross-strait relations.
