‘Chocolaty Hero’ Waheed Murad Remembered on 40th Death Anniversary

ISLAMABAD: The 40th death anniversary of Waheed Murad, a producer and screenwriter known as “Chocolatey Hero” in Lollywood, being observed today (Thursday).

Fans from all walks of life recalled their hero, whose work they still find inspiring, as they commemorated his life.

Actor Waheed Murad was a global celebrity who received immense praise for his work. Waheed, nicknamed “Chocolate Hero,” acted in hundreds of films, most of which were box-office successes.

Murad was born in Sialkot on October 2, 1938, and moved to Karachi to complete his education. He joined the company founded by his father, Nisar Murad, to begin his career as a producer in films. Insaan Badalta Hai was the title of his 1961 debut production.

In 1966, he acted in ‘Armaan’ under his production, which Pervaiz Malik directed. This movie broke all the box office records and completed 75 weeks in theatres. The film was a romantic and musical love story.

He received two Nigar awards for the categories of best actor and the best producer for the film ‘Armaan.’ The same year, he starred in another movie, ‘Jaag utha insaan,’ with co-star Zeba.

In 1967, he appeared as a leading actor in films like Devar Bhabi, Maan Baap, Doraha, and Insaaniyat. The story of the film, ‘Devar Bhabi,’ was based on Indo-Pak’s unjust social norms and thoughts. In Insaaniyat, he played the role of a dedicated doctor.

His unique acting style is now taught in Indian and Pakistani film education centers. Acknowledged as one of Pakistan’s trailblazing Rock n’ Roll stars, he earned the titles ‘Chocolaty Hero’ and ‘Lady Killer’ due to his romantic and captivating acting style.

Over his 25-year acting career, Murad contributed to approximately 125 films, spanning Urdu, Punjabi, and Pashto productions. Additionally, he produced 11 films and directed one titled “Ishaara.”

He won around 32 prestigious awards, including the Sitara e Imtiaz. Sadly, he passed away on November 23, 1983, in Karachi at the age of 45. —APP
