LONDON: London Mayor Sadiq Khan is extending a heartfelt invitation to EU citizens to embrace the charms of London despite the new challenges posed by Brexit.

In a candid conversation with The Guardian, Khan reiterated his dedication to attracting EU citizens to choose London as their preferred destination over other European cities, even in the face of fresh hurdles like visa requirements.

Khan emphasized his responsibility in making London an even more enticing place to live and work, highlighting the city’s vibrant nightlife, rich cultural institutions, and its values that he believes surpass the convenience of other European cities due to free movement. He pointed out recent high-profile events, such as the Abba Voyage show and Major League Baseball, to showcase the cultural richness of the city.

With over a million EU citizens already residing in London, Khan emphasized that while the UK has left the European Union, London remains deeply rooted as a European city and, in his view, the capital of Europe. He acknowledged the changed perception of the UK following Brexit, but remained optimistic about London’s enduring appeal.

EU citizens can obtain a UK work visa if they secure a higher-income role, typically exceeding £26,200, while they can move freely within the EU. Despite the practical challenges, Khan expressed concerns about the decline in cultural and educational exchanges between the UK and the EU, which have deepened relationships and fostered understanding over decades.

Khan emphasized the importance of maintaining strong links with European cities, not just for economic reasons but also for preserving the values of tolerance and inclusivity. He mentioned his strong ties with European mayors and highlighted issues like air quality that are being addressed through collaborative efforts.

Looking ahead, Khan expressed concerns about the potential impact of declining interactions and relationships on the UK’s economy and values. He stressed the necessity of aligning with EU rules and practices to mitigate Brexit’s consequences. Despite his reservations about the limitations imposed by Brexit, Khan urged open discussions on the topic, aiming to bridge the divide and seek the best way forward for London and the UK.

In the immediate term, Khan advocated for a reciprocal youth mobility scheme with the EU to alleviate skills shortages in London’s hospitality sector, underlining the importance of addressing workforce challenges and ensuring the city remains an attractive destination for all.
