ISLAMABAD: Khaista Khan, a 60-year-old cobbler from Bajaur tribal district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), is currently living in Islamabad. He has been in the profession for almost 35 years, but due to the high inflation rate, especially during the holy month of Ramazan, he is finding it difficult to manage his finances.
Khan said that he earns only Rs. 400 to 500 daily, which is barely enough to feed his family. He said that during Ramazan, prices of essential items skyrocket, making it harder for him to make ends meet. He expressed his worries about how he will be able to provide for his family during the month of Ramazan.
The cobbler’s situation is a reflection of the wider economic struggles faced by low-income households in Pakistan. The country has been grappling with high inflation rates for several years, which have only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and failed economic policies.
Inflation has hit low-income earners the hardest, making it difficult for them to afford basic necessities like food, clothing, and housing.
Khan’s story highlights the urgent need for the government to take measures to address inflation and provide support to vulnerable communities during the month of Ramazan.
As one of the most important months in the Islamic calendar, it is a time when many people, especially those who are less fortunate, rely on the kindness of others to provide for their needs.
