Damascus, Syria: In Damascus, a group of motorbike enthusiasts known as Hope Bikers Syria are on a mission of compassion during Ramadan, delivering meals to the needy as part of their charitable endeavors.
Led by Tarek Obaid, the club’s 50 volunteers don their signature blue vests adorned with a flaming motorbike emblem and the Syrian flag as they zoom through the city’s streets, delivering food to disadvantaged areas every evening at sunset.
Operating for humanitarian reasons, the bikers aim to destigmatize motorcycles while spreading goodwill. Their efforts transcend religious boundaries, with both Christian and Muslim members participating in the charitable initiatives.
Despite Syria’s turmoil from 13 years of conflict, with devastating impacts on the population and economy, the bikers remain undeterred in their mission to serve the community.
Initially mobilizing during the COVID-19 pandemic to transport oxygen supplies, the group has since expanded its efforts to assist earthquake victims, organize recreational activities for orphaned children, and now, provide meals during Ramadan.
Fueling their motorcycles at their own expense, the bikers navigate through traffic and petrol shortages to swiftly deliver meals to various locations, including homes for the elderly on the outskirts of Damascus.
Their altruistic efforts aim to reshape perceptions of motorbikes in a country where they’ve been associated with theft and crime. Instead, the bikers seek to restore biking’s reputation as a vehicle for social responsibility and aid.
For members like George Hafteh and Amer Totanji, the act of riding motorcycles transcends mere transportation—it’s a symbol of solidarity and a tool for making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.
