BEIJING, China: State media reported a deadly attack at a hospital in Zhenxiong County, Yunnan province, China, leaving more than 10 people dead or wounded.

While the nature of the attack was not specified, images published by The Paper showed a confrontation involving a knife and a stick in the hospital lobby. Authorities are investigating the incident, which occurred in a country where mass violent crime is rare due to strict gun ownership laws but has seen sporadic stabbings in recent years.

The attack, which took place on Tuesday morning, sparked chaos in the area as local residents tried to ascertain the extent of the casualties. This incident adds to a series of violent events in China, including stabbings in Yunnan province last August and a kindergarten stabbing in Guangdong province the month before. Another knife attack at a kindergarten in Jiangxi province in August 2022 resulted in multiple casualties.

While China has stringent gun control measures, incidents involving knives have raised concerns about public safety and mental health awareness. The latest attack underscores the need for enhanced security measures and mental health support to prevent such tragedies in the future.
