WASHINGTON: Dozens of Democratic lawmakers in the United States have written a letter to US President Joe Biden insisting that the current Israeli restrictions on humanitarian aid and help entering Gaza “call into question” their compliance with the law of the United States.

The 86 members of the House of Representatives stated that they believed there is solid evidence that Israel is completely failing to comply with a United States Foreign Assistance Act provision, which needs recipients of US-sponsored arms to uphold global humanitarian law, as well as permit the free flow of US assistance.

The lawmakers said that they expected Biden’s administration to ensure [Israel’s] compliance with current law and to take all steps to stop further humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip.  In February, President Biden also issued a national security memorandum mandating assurances from recipients of US military help those stipulations on humanitarian law and help are being adhered to.

Four State Department bureaus also advised US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in April that Israel’s claims that it is adhering to global humanitarian law in the Gaza are “neither credible nor reliable”.

Gaza Health Ministry said that at least 34,622 Palestinian people including women and children have been killed in the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7. It added that more than 77,867 people were wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza in the same period.
