ISLAMABAD: The world celebrates World Donkey Day to honor the humble donkey and recognize its remarkable qualities. This day serves as a global platform to celebrate the existence of donkeys and their profound impact on human civilization.

Symbolic Interpretations:

Donkeys hold diverse symbolic interpretations worldwide. While in the US, the donkey is the electoral symbol of the Democratic Party, in other parts of the world, they are often associated with endearing qualities, such as being “loveable goofs.” Despite stereotypes, donkeys are intelligent, sociable, and calm animals capable of independent thinking and decision-making. Their strength and cautious nature make them reliable companions. While perceived as stubborn, their independence and reluctance to engage in unsafe tasks stem from their intelligence rather than foolishness.

Historical Background:

World Donkey Day originated in 2018, introduced by Ark Raziq, a researcher specializing in desert fauna. Raziq aimed to address the lack of recognition for the donkey’s contributions to society. The inaugural observance took place in 2019 and has since become an annual event on May 8. Various organizations utilize this day to raise awareness about donkeys and advocate for their protection. Additionally, the occasion promotes responsible donkey care practices.

Reasons to Commemorate:

Donkeys have played integral roles in human activities for centuries, facilitating transportation, construction, agriculture, and even warfare. Today, they continue to serve various purposes and remain popular attractions in zoological parks worldwide.

Celebrating World Donkey Day fosters awareness about animal welfare and ensures the enduring positive influence of these remarkable creatures on our planet.
