AMSTERDAM: A hostage situation in Ede, Netherlands that lasted for several hours ended peacefully on Saturday as all four hostages were safely released and the suspect was arrested by police.

Authorities have ruled out a “terrorist motive” for the incident, which took place at a popular night spot in the town.

Police responded to reports of a potential hostage situation at Cafe Petticoat around 5:15 am local time.

The suspect, described as “confused,” entered the establishment armed with multiple knives, which he used to threaten the hostages, according to prosecutor Marthyne Kunst.

The suspect also carried a black backpack, raising concerns of possible explosives, and prompting a thorough investigation by authorities.

Upon arriving at the scene, police immediately initiated negotiations with the suspect, leading to the safe resolution of the situation.

The suspect, known to law enforcement with a history of threatening behaviour, is now under investigation regarding his motives and mental state, Kunst confirmed during a press conference.
