TASHKENT: A moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 struck 47 kilometers (29 miles) south of Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan, on Monday, April 1, 2024, at 11:13 AM local time.

The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). Despite its magnitude and proximity to Tashkent, the earthquake was not widely felt or reported. Tashkent, with a population of approximately 2,000,000 inhabitants, is the nearest major city to the epicenter. Residents there likely experienced only weak shaking.

However, smaller towns and villages closer to the epicenter may have experienced stronger shaking. The exact extent of the earthquake’s impact on these areas is yet to be determined.

Seismic activity is not uncommon in Uzbekistan, as it is situated in a region prone to earthquakes due to its location near tectonic plate boundaries. Authorities continue to monitor the situation for any potential aftershocks or further seismic activity.
