CAIRO: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Saturday discussed the humanitarian situation in the besieged Gaza Strip and agreed on continued efforts to reach a ceasefire in the Palestinian territory despite the US veto of the UN resolution for an immediate ceasefire.

In a joint effort to address the escalating crisis in the Gaza Strip, the presidents of Egypt and Russia engaged in a telephone conversation to discuss the situation and strategize on the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the besieged enclave.

According to Egyptian presidential spokesman Ahmed Fahmy, the leaders agreed on the necessity of sustained efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the Palestinian territory. During the call, al-Sisi and Putin also discussed Egypt’s ongoing endeavors to provide essential humanitarian aid to the residents of Gaza.

The discussion between the two leaders took place after the United States blocked a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution on Friday that called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, using its veto to protect Israel from condemnation. The ongoing Israeli bombardments in Gaza since October 7, have resulted in over 17,490 Palestinian casualties.

The Egyptian president emphasized his country’s robust commitment to encouraging a ceasefire, protecting civilian lives, and delivering aid to alleviate the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza. The statement released by the Egyptian presidency detailed the extensive aid provided by Egypt, including over 21,000 tons of assistance, encompassing medical supplies, food, water, and other relief materials.

Both leaders, al-Sisi and Putin, underscored the need for international collaboration to achieve a just and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian issue. Their shared vision is anchored in a two-state solution that guarantees the establishment and recognition of a Palestinian state, aligning with relevant international legal frameworks.
