Eight Killed in Thailand After Train Hits Truck

BANGKOK:  Local officials said on Friday that at least eight people were killed when a cargo train hit a truck trying to cross the railway tracks in Thailand.  In a statement the State Railway of Thailand said that the accident took place about 2:20 am at an unauthorised crossing in Chachoengsao province.

The statement said that the driver had sounded his warning horn as he reached the crossing point but was unable to stop before striking the truck, which was carrying fish. It maintained that the train driver followed the protocol and rules by sounding the alarm 3 times, but the close proximity made it very difficult for him to stop the train in time.

Local officials confirmed that eight people including five men and three women were killed in the accident. Reports said that four people were wounded in the mishap. It said that all the wounded were shifted to hospital.

Fatal accidents are very common in Thailand, which often tops lists of the world’s most deadly roads, with speeding, and weak law enforcement contributing factors.

In 2020, as many as 18 people were killed when a train collided into a bus taking commuters to a religious event.
