NEW DELHI: A devastating incident unfolded in the Dhiraimajuli area of Assam’s Sonitpur district, as four individuals, including two forest officials, lost their lives in a fatal encounter with a wild elephant.

The tragic incident occurred approximately 147 kilometers northeast of Dispur, the capital city of Assam, sending shockwaves through the local community.

According to District Forest Officer Pirai Sudhan, the sequence of events began when one individual ventured out of his house late at night, only to encounter the wild elephant. In a subsequent attempt to scare away the animal, another person tragically lost his life. Subsequently, the elephant turned its aggression towards two forest officials who were patrolling the area, resulting in their untimely demise.

The incident has prompted the forest department to issue an alert and mobilize additional personnel to intensify patrolling efforts and manage the situation. However, the tragic loss of lives underscores the ongoing challenges faced in mitigating human-wildlife conflicts and ensuring the safety of communities residing in proximity to forested areas.
