Eleven People Die of Sunstroke Near Mumbai

MUMBAI: At least eleven persons passed away on Sunday from sunstroke during an event the home minister of India attended on the outskirts of Mumbai, the chief minister of Maharashtra state said.

On the outskirts of the country’s financial centre of Mumbai in the Maharashtra state, hundreds of thousands of people attended an award ceremony on Sunday afternoon when federal home minister Amit Shah gave an award to a well-known social worker.

The event was held outside in Kharghar in the afternoon at a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit), which is usual for this time of year.

Eknath Shinde, the chief minister of Maharashtra, told reporters late on Sunday night that 11 persons had died and 50 had been brought to the hospital after the incident. According to the weather bureau, India is anticipated to endure heat waves between March and May.
