BRUSSELS: European Union legislators has made an agreement to one of the world’s first major inclusive artificial intelligence (AI) laws, Western media reported on Saturday.
The milestone legislation, called the AI Act, sets up a governing framework to promote the development of Artificial Intelligence while addressing the risks linked with the rapidly growing technology.
The law bans harmful Artificial Intelligence practices “considered to be a clear and potential threat to individuals’ safety, rights and livelihoods.” The legislation comes amid increasing fears regarding the disruptive abilities of artificial intelligence (AI).
EU Agrees to Regulate Harmful Effects of AI
In a press conference, Roberta Metsola, the president of the European Parliament, termed the AI Act “a balanced approach” that will “no doubt be set up the international standard for years to come.”
The regulatory framework was first recommended in 2021, the Western media reported.
Limited risk systems, such as technologies or OpenAI’s ChatGPT that generates images, video or audio content, are subject to new obligations under the AI law.
