BRUSSELS: The European Union (EU) on Friday announced to provide an additional $73 million desperately needed financial assistance to Palestinians in Gaza.

The territory has been devastated by Israeli bombardment and ground military operations for more than six months.

After October 7, the civilian population of the besieged Palestinian enclave is in need of humanitarian assistance to survive.

The EU in the statement said that in light of the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and the increase of needs on the ground, the European Commission is enhancing its financial assistance to support Palestinians affected by the ongoing conflict.

It said that support brings total EU humanitarian aid to 193 million euros for Palestinians in need inside war hit Gaza and across the region in 2024.

The EU said the new assistance would be spent on food deliveries, sanitation, clean water and shelters through local partners on the ground.

The United Nations has stated that Israel’s military offensive has turned Gaza into a humanitarian hellscape, with looming fears of famine.

The EU and United States have asked Israel to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza.

Earlier, the US military said it had started construction of a pier meant to enhance deliveries to the territory.
