ISLAMABAD: The National Heritage and Culture Division, Department of Archaeology and Museum, has reported significant progress in the excavation and cleaning efforts at Mai Qamro Mosque and Muqarab Khan Tomb, situated in the quaint village of Bagh Jogian near Islamabad.

Dating back to the early 16th century, Mai Qamro Mosque holds historical significance as a testament to the architectural prowess of the Ghakkar dynasty. Constructed by Mai Qamro, the wife of Hathi Khan Ghakkar, a prominent figure of the Ghakkar dynasty, the mosque stands as a symbol of the influential role women played during that era.

The mosque, designed on a rectangular plan, is adorned with three distinctive squat domes, each contributing to its architectural grandeur. While the southern dome has succumbed to the passage of time, the two remaining domes remain intact, showcasing the resilience of the structure.

Of particular note are the three arched entrances of the mosque, with the central entrance flanked by two recessed arches, adding to the allure of the façade. Intricate cut-brick ornamentation adorns the arches, a unique feature not commonly found in the Potohar region. The mosque’s construction primarily utilized dressed stone, with remnants of plaster still visible on its exterior.

Despite the ravages of time, parts of the mosque’s boundary wall have endured, with the northern boundary still standing and remnants of the southern and eastern walls visible. These remnants offer valuable insights into the architectural and historical significance of the site.

The ongoing excavation and cleaning efforts, reaching 80 percent completion, signify a crucial step towards preserving and showcasing the rich cultural heritage embodied by Mai Qamro Mosque and Muqarab Khan Tomb. As these efforts continue, they contribute to the preservation of Pakistan’s diverse historical legacy for future generations to appreciate and cherish.
