Exiled Kashmiri Leader Professor Nazir Ahmed Shawl Laid to Rest in London

LONDON: In a somber ceremony at the central mosque in Hounslow, London, the funeral prayer for the late exiled Kashmiri leader, Professor Nazir Ahmed Shawl, was performed.

The funeral prayer was attended by Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Dr. Mohammad Faisal, Kashmiri leader Chaudhry Latif Akbar, Majeed Trumbo, Nazir Qureshi, and a large number of community members who bid a final farewell to the venerable leader.

The High Commissioner of Pakistan laid a floral wreath on the departed leader’s body, paying tribute to his significant contributions.

Professor Nazir Ahmed Shawl, a stalwart figure in the struggle for the liberation of Indian illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), passed away at the age of eighty-six due to cardiac arrest. Having arrived in Pakistan from IIOJK in 1992, Professor Shawl dedicated his life to the international advocacy for the liberation of Jammu and Kashmir.

During the funeral prayer, attendees highlighted Professor Shawl’s representation of Baba Hurriyat Syed Ali Geelani in the All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) Azad Kashmir chapter. A senior Hurriyat leader from Baramulla Kashmir, Professor Shawl was a multifaceted individual, renowned as a pioneer of human rights, poet, writer, journalist, columnist, and educationist. Proficient in English, Urdu, and Kashmiri languages, he contributed significantly to the literary and journalistic spheres.

Professor Nazir Ahmad Shawl authored several books and served as the Chief Editor of the daily Kashmir Mirror, news agency Sana News, Kashmir Press International, and the Executive Director of the Kashmir Center UK. The participants in the funeral prayer expressed that Professor Shawl’s tireless services and profound impact on the Kashmir cause will be indelibly etched in the annals of history.

As the exiled Kashmiri leader is laid to rest, his legacy lives on through his writings, and the community vowed to honor his memory by continuing the struggle for the rights and liberation of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
