ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Museum for Natural History (PMNH), the country’s sole natural history museum, is set for expansion after years of neglect, with the government allocating funds for the completion of its remaining blocks.

Established in 1976, PMNH has faced challenges due to incomplete construction, hindering its ability to display its vast collection of specimens effectively. However, in 2023, the government allocated funds for the construction of the remaining six blocks, marking a significant step forward for the institution.

Dr. Khalid Mehmood, overseeing the project, confirmed that construction has commenced after receiving initial funds, with completion expected within three years. This expansion aims to address space shortages and enhance the display of specimens, attracting more visitors to the museum.

Despite recent advancements in the science and technology sector in Pakistan, PMNH had struggled to secure adequate funding for its expansion. With only two blocks completed since its inception, the museum had to make do with limited space for exhibits.

PMNH plays a crucial role in research and education, offering facilities for research projects and organizing various educational activities related to natural history and biodiversity. It has also formed national and international partnerships with research institutes.

Dr. Saima Tanveer, Director General of PMNH, highlighted several ongoing research projects, including studies on wildlife hazards and insect fauna, demonstrating the museum’s commitment to scientific inquiry.

Despite financial constraints, PMNH has generated significant revenue through visitor admissions, indicating its popularity among the public. The museum attracts a diverse range of visitors, including students and foreigners, contributing to its educational mission.

The expansion project will not only increase the museum’s capacity to accommodate visitors but also enhance its research capabilities. With designated divisions focused on botanical, zoological, and earth sciences, PMNH is poised to further its contributions to scientific knowledge and public education.

As an attached department of the Pakistan Science Foundation, PMNH plays a vital role in preserving and showcasing Pakistan’s natural heritage. The completion of the remaining blocks will undoubtedly bolster its efforts in fulfilling this mandate and promoting a greater understanding of biodiversity and natural history.
