LONDON: FIFA is set to conduct a vote to determine the host nation for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, with Brazil and the joint bid of Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany (BNG) as contenders. Both bids meet the hosting criteria, but Brazil has outperformed in technical aspects, including stadiums, accommodation, fan zones, and transport.

Should Brazil’s bid prevail, it would mark the inaugural occasion of the tournament being held in South America. The decision will be made by FIFA’s 211 member associations during the 74th FIFA Congress in Bangkok on May 17.

According to a bid evaluation report released by FIFA on Tuesday, Brazil’s bid scored 4.0 out of five in technical evaluation, while the BNG joint bid scored 3.7. The report emphasized the significance of South America hosting the competition for the first time, potentially catalyzing substantial growth in women’s football in the region.

Nevertheless, the report acknowledged the compact tournament footprint of the BNG bid, with short distances between venues, contrasting with Brazil’s reliance on air travel between host cities, which is deemed carbon intensive.

Recently, the United States and Mexico withdrew their joint bid for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, opting to focus on bidding for the 2031 tournament, mirroring South Africa’s decision made in November.
