ISTANBUL: In the bustling city of Istanbul, a unique initiative is underway to promote physical fitness among the elderly through mosque-based exercise programs.

Spearheaded by the Bagcilar district council, this project aims to enhance the well-being of worshippers by integrating exercise sessions into their daily routines.

At the Abdulhamid Han Mosque, silver-haired men gather after afternoon prayers to participate in guided exercises led by a dedicated instructor. With feet firmly planted on the vibrant turquoise carpet, participants engage in a series of movements designed to improve flexibility and mobility. For many, this initiative represents an opportunity to revitalize their bodies and foster a sense of community within the mosque.

Servet Arici, a regular participant, underscores the importance of physical activity in maintaining overall health, likening the human body to a vehicle that requires regular maintenance. Others, like Huseyin Kaya, express gratitude for the chance to invigorate their bodies and enhance their quality of life through exercise.

The fitness sessions, conducted daily after noon and late afternoon prayers, cater specifically to male worshippers, with plans to include women in the future. Recognizing the disparity in physical activity levels between genders, authorities express openness to expanding the program to benefit women, who often face barriers to exercise opportunities.

The initiative has garnered praise from health experts, who highlight the potential benefits of promoting physical activity among elderly populations, particularly in disadvantaged neighborhoods. Serap Inal, a physiotherapy expert, suggests that exercising outdoors may offer additional benefits, but acknowledges the positive impact of mosque-based fitness programs.

Imam Bulent Cinar, enthusiastic about the initiative’s success, views the mosque as more than a place of worship, emphasizing its role in fostering holistic well-being. He notes improvements in participants’ prayer quality and overall vitality, underscoring the rejuvenating effects of regular exercise.

As Turkey grapples with an aging population and sedentary lifestyles, initiatives like these demonstrate the potential of community spaces, such as mosques, to promote physical fitness and enhance the lives of worshippers. With plans for expansion and inclusivity, the fitness initiative in Istanbul mosques serves as a beacon of hope for healthier, more vibrant communities.
